Who is this for? This 2-part course is suitable for anyone wishing to deepen their understanding of Autism and learn how to support themselves or anyone they know who may be autistic. What will I learn? These sessions will provide you with practical and supportive strategies, seeking to demystifies autism through lived experience examples, discussion, and evidence-informed tools. Part 1 - we set the foundations to understanding autism and how it influences an individual’s thinking, perception, and communication. You will be introduced to the broad and non-linear nature of the spectrum which highlights the unique combination of strengths and challenges experienced by each person. The session also addresses common misconceptions and stereotypes that can lead to misunderstanding or stigma. Special attention is given to the relationship between autism and mental health, including the high prevalence of co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. Part 1 also unpacks the concept of masking and how this can affect identity, self-worth, and mental wellbeing. Part 2 - of the course focuses on practical support and inclusive strategies to better assist autistic individuals. It introduces the 5 S Framework as a foundation for tailored support. You will explore effective communication strategies, including the use of clear, direct language, and learn how to support emotional regulation and manage transitions. How can I use what I learn? Students will be equipped with practical knowledge and we hope, more confidence to challenge misconceptions about autism and reduce stigma. The strategies and tools shared can be applied across a variety of settings and in their day to day interaction with autistic individuals.
