Course / Workshop Content

Who is this for? Everyone is welcome! This weekly gardening course runs on Mondays and Wednesdays (10.30am–2pm) during spring, summer, and early autumn. In winter, sessions run on Wednesdays only, at the same time. Participants should have a reasonable level of physical health, but lighter tasks can be arranged with support. Facilities include four Stepping Stones plots, raised beds, table workspaces, and a polytunnel. Students can attend full sessions or drop in for part of the time. The group also offers a strong social element, with regular tea and coffee breaks. It’s ideal for people who enjoy being outdoors and want to meet others in a relaxed, low-pressure setting. What will I learn? You’ll learn basic domestic gardening skills, including planting, seeding, watering, weeding, pruning, digging, composting, and greenhouse or polytunnel work. Occasionally, the group supports communal plots or Landshare activities under staff guidance. You’ll also gain or refresh knowledge about growing vegetables, fruit, and bedding plants, while enjoying time outdoors with a friendly group. Please note: Participants must wear sturdy outdoor footwear (e.g. steel toe-capped boots or wellingtons) and suitable clothing for physical outdoor work. How can I use what I learn? Skills learned can be used at home in gardens, allotments, or for indoor plant care. Group updates and gardening information are shared via the Stepping Stones Gardening group, which also allows students to notify absences. Produce grown on the Stepping Stones plots is shared among group members, with regular attendees given priority.
