Understanding and Managing Self Harm

One 2-hour session. 10:30am - 12:30pm, Thursday 25th April Debbie Workman

  • Stepping Stones Recovery College

Course / Workshop Content

Dispelling some of the myths around one of the most common forms of mental distress, this workshop will help you to understand what self-harm is, offer practical strategies to manage and control the urge to self-harm and to provide learning that will help you to support someone who self-harms. Who is this for? Self-harm is something that can make many feel uncomfortable and although it can be difficult to understand, is very common. This 2-hour workshop is for anyone who would like to explore their understanding of self-harm and self injury. Due to the nature of this topic, please be aware conversation will be emotive. What will I learn? In this workshop, we will explore attitudes and preconceptions towards self harm and self-injury and functions. We will gain an understanding of potential causes, triggers, and an awareness of the cycle of self-harm. We will consider helpful and sensitive responses to self-injury and discuss steps that someone can take to help them make different choices that might help them cope. How can I use what I learn? Feel more confident in having a sensitive and caring conversation about self injury. You will gain an awareness of treatment, support and resources that are available to someone who self-injures and for those who are supporting someone. You will gain reassurance that you are not alone, and have open conversations around some practical and healthy coping techniques that others who have self-injured, have found helpful.
